Caltha LLP Project Summary
Project: Compliance Review & Waste Water Management Procedure Development
Client: Chemical Processing Facility
Location(s): Arizona
Key Elements: Industrial waste water discharge, Waste management procedures, POTW industrial user rule, Wastewater sampling
Overview:
Caltha LLP was retained by this Arizona chemical plant to conduct a comprehensive assessment of wastewater management practices, a critical aspect of ensuring environmental compliance and operational efficiency. This assessment was not merely a cursory glance at existing processes; it involved a thorough and systematic review of the various raw materials utilized in production, as well as the waste products generated throughout the manufacturing process. The primary objective was to identify which of these materials and byproducts could potentially be discharged into the sanitary sewer system without violating regulatory standards.
To facilitate this process, Caltha's skilled staff engaged in detailed discussions with the Publicly Owned Treatment Works (POTW) to establish clear waste acceptance criteria. This collaboration was essential, as it allowed Caltha to gain insights into the specific requirements and limitations imposed by the POTW regarding the types of waste that could be safely processed. During these meetings, key parameters were developed that would serve as benchmarks for evaluating the suitability of various waste streams for discharge. These parameters included factors such as pH levels, chemical composition, and the presence of hazardous materials, all of which are crucial for determining whether a waste stream aligns with regulatory compliance and environmental safety standards.
Following the establishment of these parameters, Caltha proceeded to prepare a comprehensive written procedure designed specifically for the facility operators. This procedure outlined a systematic approach for screening waste streams, enabling operators to effectively assess whether a particular waste could be discharged to the POTW. The document included step-by-step guidelines, criteria for evaluation, and necessary documentation processes, ensuring that operators had a clear and actionable framework to follow. Furthermore, to ensure that the procedure was robust and aligned with regulatory expectations, Caltha submitted the developed screening procedure to the POTW for their review and concurrence. This step was vital, as it fostered collaboration and transparency between the chemical plant and the POTW, ultimately leading to a more efficient and compliant wastewater management strategy. By taking these comprehensive steps, Caltha LLP not only assisted the chemical plant in adhering to environmental regulations but also contributed to the overall sustainability of wastewater management practices in the region.
